HUMANITARIAN MISSION IN BENIN – OCTOBER 2017

The 3rd humanitarian mission (Urology / Gynecology) took place in collaboration with the Clinique Médicale Humanitaire Ste Agnès.

GENERAL CONSULTATIONS AND SCREENING

The members of our medical and humanitarian convoy are :

– Dr S. Regusci (Urologist)
– Dr J. Matute (Gynecologist)
– Dr A. Kashef (Gynecologist)
– Denis Agboton (Coordinator)

The objectives of this mission are:

– Bring medication and medical equipment
– Review patients from previous missions
– Consult a large sample of patients for screening purposes (Colposcopy / general urology)
– Determine the right therapeutic attitude according to the circumstances
– Strengthen collaboration with local colleagues

From October 21 to 26, 2017, Dr Regusci (Urologist) and Matute (Gynecologist) offered both their time and know-how to consult and treat underprivileged populations in the premises of the Ste Agnès de Sègbéya Humanitarian Medical Center in Cotonou, Benin.

Dr Kashef prepared all the gynecological part of the mission upstream by receiving and interpreting the smear test results.

In urology 47 patients from underprivileged populations were treated.

SMI is willing to train and transfer their know-how to local practitioners, that is why the first flexible cystoscopy with local anaesthesia intervention in Benin was performed as part of this mission in collaboration with a young Beninese urologist.

This first joint intervention was made possible thanks to the generosity of the Michèle Berset Foundation (in Switzerland) which co-financed (with SMI) the development of a room for minor urological surgery. This room is now operational and can be used for urological care.

In gynaecology 74 patients from underprivileged populations were treated. 9 cases of cervical cancer risk were detected. We also started a new collaboration with the NGO RACINES, ( RACINES takes care of people with HIV) .

Joint efforts between nursing staff in Benin and the expertise of SMI doctors will undoubtedly make it possible for these women to avoid certain death.

Finally, we provided the local population with medicines, medical equipment and care thanks to the contributions of our members and donors.

We would like to express our profound gratitude to all our members and donators without whom none of this would be possible.
